“THE POSTMODERN JUNCTURE”: A COLLECTION OF ARTWORKS BY SUCHIT SAHNI @ The Lodhi, New Delhi from 5th to 30th September 2022.
Suchit Sahni's artworks depict postmodern stories that are intricately rendered using bold and bright colours with the occasional figure seemingly rooted in the past yet placed in a setting of ultra-modernity. This collection of artworks lies between registration, interpretation, and chronicling events around the artist as he understands them. The show is titled “Postmodern Juncture” as Suchit Sahni’s works represent the crossroads of our past, present, and future specifically in the Indian context that are webbed in fluorescent greens, pinks, and yellows. He creates a space where ideologically the artworks are contemporary but the subject is historically Indian, therefore enhancing the juxtaposition visually, further revealing artworks that are a riot of colours, forms, and history.
The artist Suchit Sahni, as all postmodernists do, creates a unique visual paradigm that thereby creates a new experiential reality for the viewer. Living in the city, the artist truly enjoys the nostalgia associated with Delhi but also includes the changes he finds in the city as reminders of the past that remain intact in his art as he depicts them. The vast and complex history of Delhi served as his inspiration for this series as he borrows a style inspired by Mughal Miniature paintings with the artist's twist. The artworks serve as a true reminder of the past, as emperors in history are now placed in modern settings mediated through colours, forms, and rhythmic movements, especially in abstract stylings. As an artist, he takes this nostalgic reminder and transcends it from the apparent into an abstraction that brings out the essence of Delhi. The distance of perception that he demands from the viewer exemplifies the abstract values that he invests in the images. Suchit, within his paintings, re-invents the same physical aspects of understanding history and urges his viewers to explore complex notions about subjective reality and history and to focus on the artist’s unique perspective.
